Meet Julie Odell!!!

Whether you are reading Pitchfork or Stereogum or GorillavsBear, you can see there is a preference for certain types of music despite most catering to the general indie community. I have a preference, albeit one that changes.  My current preference seems to be for female singer-songwriters and anyone that can swing a Jewel/Fiona Apple/Regina Spektor cover song!

I'd like to introduce you to a talented young lady who sings no cover songs, but has many of her own gems.  Julie Odell is from New Orleans per her Soundcloud page and while that's about all I can find out about her, I have been enjoying her music.

Check out her tunes below, and listen to "Old Buried Treasure" a song that debuts in my Weekly Top 100 this week!

Weekly Top 30 for January 25th

OK so i haven't posted this past week due to there not being a ton of new songs I am excited about, and I was celebrating my last week before spring semester starts!  But I still did a Top 100 countdown and here's the Top 30!

We have a new #1 song in Purity Ring this week. Their new album is out on March 3rd and I cannot wait! They also have a new song in the Top 30, their 2nd single "Begin Again".

Also moving up in the Top 10 are Modest Mouse, moving to #3 and Chvrches up to #6. Dan Deacon makes his (believe it or not) first ever trip to my Weekly Top 10 with his new track "Feel The Lightning".

Big movers are MO's timely song "New Years Eve"  up almost 20 spots and a new song by the Decemberists, "the Lake Song".

Looking ahead there looks to be several new songs coming into the Top 30 next week including Parquet Courts, new Matt & Kim and Broken Social Scene.

Weekly Top 30 for January 18

I hope everyone had a great MLK Day and is having a short work week.

I am a day later than I wanted to be because I myself did not get a short work week, but here is this week's chart.

It doesn't change much as the Decemberists cling to number 1. "Make You Better" made the Top 100 of 2014 and is still dominating in 2015. Not even Killer Mike, El-P and Zach De La Rocha can overtake Meloy and company!

Parkay Quarts (or Parquet Courts) appears to have given up, while the ladies, Hannah Diamond and Jessica Pratt are hanging steady.  New to the Top 10 is the Modest Mouse track "Lampshades on Fire" and the latest King Tuff single "Black Moon Spell".

A few new songs enter the Top 30, most notable is R&B singer/model Kacy Hill.  I'll do a post about her later, but her song "Experience" is kind of like a less odd FKA Twigs song. It's great and still poppy all in one. Also a new Kanye West song joins the Top 30 in his "duet" with Paul McCartney.

Next week, I have a feeling we'll be talking about a second Purity Ring song, a new Matt & Kim jam and a song with the F-word in the title ;)

Gangly - "Fuck With Someone Else"

It has been a while since we've had a good Icelandic song to listen to. Now, I realize that 2015 will be the return of Bjork so we wouldn't have had to wait much longer anyway.  I stumbled upon this from reading Consequence of Sound and quite liked not only the song but the message it sent as well.

Really though, fuck with someone else please.

Gangly, as far as I know, only has this song out and about so we'll keep our eyes posted for more from them in the future.....

Iron & Wine, Matt & Kim & Purity Ring

First off we have a new track from Iron and Wine. It's an old one actually. Sam is releasing an archival set of tunes from circa 2002, but since it hasn't been released yet, I thought it would be as good as a new song to everyone right?

Iron & Wine - "Everyone's Summer of 95"

Matt & Kim will be back in 2015! If you hadn't noticed they were gone it's because they really never go away. They have toured constantly until 2014 and then still played more than a dozen festivals last year.  They'll probably be on the bill for some more this year as they are almost the perfect band for 4pm in the hot hot sun to get you back on your feet and ready for the evening. If you saw M&K over the summer last year you may be in this video!

Finally we have another new track from Purity Ring. This one is a little less "chvrchy" and a touch more glitchy. It gives us promise that at least a few of the new tracks sound like "Fineshrine" or "Belispeak".   I can't wait to see these 2 play live again in 2015!

Meet Natalie Prass

Today's post is not such a new song but a song that is being re-issued so to speak and who finally has an album to call itself home on. Natalie Prass, member of Jenny Lewis' backing band and she's just fantastic. Found this on Stereogum and wanted to share!

Spoon - "Inside Out" (Tycho Remix)

So this song was out on Soundcloud back over a month ago but I only heard it yesterday and I love it! It is a classic Spoon song, despite being on their latest album, redone by one of my favorite instrumentalists.  The hypnotic beat of Inside Out is sped up a bit in this version and a very nice musical interlude comes in at the 3rd minute.

I don't normally get all excited about cover songs but this one is fantastic!

Weekly Top 30 for January 11th

Welcome to Monday, kids!

It's time for the weekly Top 30 from Sonick Radio! For the 2nd week of the New Year we have the same number 1 song. The Decemberists hold on to the top spot with their fantastic song "Make You Better".

The Top 10 is filled with songs vying to be the next number one. Purity Ring's new song, Run the Jewels in your face banger, and songs from ladies Hannah Diamond, Jessica Pratt, and Chvrches!

Jessica Pratt is new to the Top 30, as is new Panda Bear and Alvvays.  New tracks from Modest Mouse, the Dead Weather and Say Hi also round out the up and coming songs of 2015.

Enjoy and feel free to comment!

Getting Caught Up On the Weekly Top 100

OK so I do this once a week and I want to update the last week.  I will try to post this on Sunday or Monday and perhaps include some more sound clips for some of the big gaining songs or whatever.

Let's just see how this works if I screenshot the Top 30 of this week.

In case you need help deciphering: Green colored means it's on its way up. Every song will be on Week 1 this week but you will see I'll fill in the last 2 weeks on here as well as the high place.  Enjoy!

New songs for Friday!

A couple of new songs for Friday that are catching my attention!

Los Angeles producer Shlohmo has been making delicious beats and remixes for almost 5 years now. His tune "Later" was in the Top 10 songs of 2013 and he had another Top 100 hit last year by collaborating with BANKS. This year he is back with solo stuff and this is called Emerge From Smoke. Still the typical Shlohmo beats, as good as always.

Also getting spins on my laptop this week is the new Dan Deacon song, "Feel the Lightning". Not always a Deacon fan as most of his music seems too frenetic and jumbled to be that accessible to my brain, but this time around he actually makes a song that sounds good. This one is probably headed for Top 100 of 2015 and I'm actually looking forward to the Baltimore artists' upcoming album now!

A few new songs to start you out!

Here's a quick look at a few new tunes I have been listening to a lot lately:

Hannah Diamond - "Every Night"

Are you down with PC Music yet?  Mistaken by some as a genre of music, it is actually a UK record label that has many similar artists who play, well, PC music!  Artists like AG Cook, Kane West, Spinee and Hannah Diamond. It was founded in 2013 but really started to take off in 2014.  Look for PC Music to be a real thing in 2015 and you should know about it!

Jessica Pratt - "Back Baby"

Jessica Pratt is a newish singer from California who made an album a couple years ago but it was kinda just demos and late 2014 she made this song. She has a record coming out in 2015 and I betcha we'll be hearing more from her very soon!

Run the Jewels - "Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck" feat Zach De La Rocha

I won't say much cause this is not a new song or a new band but it has come to my attention that so many of my friends do NOT know who Run the Jewels are.  Please people it's probably the best thing rap/hip-hop has going right now so just at least be familiar with it.

Welcome to the Future!

Hey kids, its 2015! No hoverboards or moon vacations quite yet, but we CAN all make music blogs and share our favorite songs, so that's something!

So perhaps you followed my Top 100 of 2014 and thought, "what the hell, I have never heard of any of these songs!!!  Well that's OK, because this year I will be updating this blog here to keep you informed of my weekly Top 100 so at year's end you can be familiar with all of my Top 100!

So stay tuned to here for weekly (or more frequent) updates on songs, charts and other happenings that interest me regarding music.

Happy New Year find people of the internet!
